Recently, I started getting the ambitious itch to literally create an art movement. I never really got into specifics, just the sudden urge to move and shake the current art foundations which I feel are drastically lacking in this day and age. While I feel our technology and our ideas are on the brink of something amazing, there's something else that just seems hollow about today, creatively and socially speaking. Essentially, we're due up for another Renaissance. There's also the dream of attempting to become a known artist before death, something that seems to elude the majority as history has proven thus far. So I figured what better way to attempt to accomplish this than with legions of like-minded folk at your side?
And that's when the obvious finally dawned on me this afternoon. I guess it helped that in my Modern Art History lecture class, we discussed Die Brücke at length. Previously, I had knowledge of the group and had seen some of their works as recently as a year ago during a run through the German Expressionism exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan. But having today's discussion take place was at the right moment.
It's very pleasing and rewarding to sit back, take a breath, and claim that I am already within and involved with an art movement. As new and as small as it is now, Digitribe is really my modern version of what Die Brücke was all about roughly a century ago. We've really taken the leap into all forms of art, not just Expressionist painting, but mixed media. And we're going about it in similar fashions as Die Brücke, going against the systematic grain of what is and what is not acceptable artistic standards. We're uniting and redefining, all at the same time.
I've been associated with most of you for over a decade now and the formula has generally been the same but now we're applying it in a few other instances while honing what we know to be tried and true. The point I am making is that I was so slow to discover I already had what I sought. So the difficulty that rests in creating and defining a movement has already been set. The challenge is to maintain it. This realization kind of puts things on a whole new pedestal for me. Not to sound pompous but it's a little exciting to be on the cusp of greatness. Can't wait to see where we end up in all of this.
