Blade Runner -- Which version?
While analyzing the different versions of Blade Runner included on the new "Final Cut" set, I noticed a little bit of word doctoring. A famous line from the original film is Roy's demand to Tyrell -- "I want more life..... fucker."
Every time I heard this line, I thought he was saying "FATHER." But my friends, who had been fans of the original movie far longer than myself, insisted the line was this naughty version. Scans of IMDB always confirmed their belief.
Well, I finally got around to watching the original theatrical cut of the film (I'd only ever seen the director's cut on DVD), there it was: "...fucker." Plain, direct, r-rated.
Curious, I pulled out my Final Cut version and played it with the subtitles on. The subtitles confirm what I've been hearing. "I want more life.... father." I skipped backwards and cranked the volume up. Sure enough, Roy's voice clearly sports the "th" sound. Father it is.
In other words, between the original theatrical cut and at least the Final Cut (but probably the Director's Cut), Ridley altered that line... permanently.
So will the Blade Runner fans accept that the line has been changed, or will they stick with the original version as the "definitive" one? (It's only a swear word, but it alters the intensity of that moment.) And if they refuse to accept the alteration, will they have to let go of the other changes in the Final Cut, namely the fixes that makes Deckard obviously a replicant?

Just found it interesting
Just found it interesting that, according to someone, there was ambiguity intended from the beginning.
Yeah, I'd heard about the
Yeah, I'd heard about the intentional ambiguity of the line that was in the original release, but truth be told, I think I like the change to a more clearly pronounced "father." I think that it actually makes the line more resonant and powerful.
when i watched the final cut
when i watched the final cut that scene felt out of place for me, too mommy/daddyish. i liked the fire of the original.
