Winne-R-GUY and Lose-R-GUY have two things in common: they're red clearance clones and they want to kill one another. Winne-R is a member of the Armed Forces, so has +3 to his Violence skill. Lose-R is a member of PLC, and only has Violence as a hobby (+1). Neither of them has a trait that is of any use to the situation, and both of them are using Red lasers and wearing Red Reflec armor.

Winne-R shoots at Lose-R.

Winne-R's trait total to attack is 4 (his Violence (+3) plus his Red laser (+1)).
Lose-R's trait total to defend is 3 (his Red Reflec Armor (+1) has a special defense (+2) against equal or lower lasers).
Both players put a hand behind their backs, raise 0-5 fingers, and throw at the same time.
Winne-R threw 5 fingers and Lose-R threw 4. It wasn't a tie, so there is no malfunction.
Winne-R's total is 9 (his original 4 plus the throw of 5).
Lose-R's total is 7 (his original 3 plus the throw of 4).
9 minus 7 is 2; Winne-R beat Lose-R, and wounded him, but it wasn't a killing shot.
Lose-R is at -1 to all combat challenges for the rest of the combat (this wound takes effect at the end of the round).

Lose-R shoots at Winne-R.

Lose-R's trait total to attack is 2 (his Violence (+1) plus his Red laser (+1)).
Winne-R's trait total to defend is 3 (his Red Reflec Armor (+1) has a special defense (+2) against equal or lower lasers).
Both players put a hand behind their backs, raise 0-5 fingers, and throw at the same time.
Lose-R threw 5 fingers and Winne-R also threw 5.
It was a tie, so both players tear off a malfunction tab. Lose-R tears one off of his laser and Winne-R tears one off of his armor (fortunately, nothing bad happens to either of them this time, but they next malfunction might be a problem!).
Lose-R's total is 7 (his original 2 plus the throw of 5).
Winne-R's total is 8 (his original 3 plus the throw of 5).
7 minus 8 is -1; Lose-R's shot bounces harmlessly off of Winne-R's armor.

Next round, wound penalties and deaths take effect; Lose-R is now at -1 to all actions.

Winne-R shoots at Lose-R.

Winne-R's trait total to attack is still 4.
Lose-R's trait total to defend is now 2, due to his -1 penalty.
Both players throw fingers at the same time.
Winne-R threw 5 fingers and Lose-R threw 4. It wasn't a tie, so there is no malfunction.
Winne-R's total is 9 (his original 4 plus the throw of 5).
Lose-R's total is 6 (his original 2 plus the throw of 4).
9 minus 6 is 3; Winne-R beat Lose-R, and it's enough for a killing shot.
Lose-R will be dead after his action.

Lose-R shoots at Winne-R.

Lose-R's trait total to attack is now 1, with his -1 penalty.
Winne-R's trait total to defend is still 3.
Both players throw fingers at the same time.
Lose-R threw 5 fingers and Winne-R threw 3. There is no malfunction.
Lose-R's total is 6 (his original 1 plus the throw of 5).
Winne-R's total is 6 (his original 3 plus the throw of 3).
6 minus 6 is 0; Lose-R's shot bounces harmlessly off of Winne-R's armor.

Lose-R drops dead after getting off one last shot, while Winne-R looks smug.
